Food Michigan Tasting Michigan

tasting Michigan – Short’s Brewing Company

My first foray into the craft beer scene was at Short’s Brewing Company in Bellaire, Michigan.  Wait – let me revise this.  My first introduction to the idea of small batch or limited edition brews was many years ago when Goose Island beer was all locally produced and they introduced Chicago to the likes of Pere Jacques and Matilda and what would become my favorite, 312.

While I’ll always be a 312 girl at heart, my experiences of years past at Goose Island don’t compare to my first visit to Short’s Brewing Company and my introduction to the world of Michigan craft breweries.  In my mind I has always linked craft beer to IPAs which I do not enjoy.  After my first visit to Short’s, I discovered there was a wide array of options to please any palate and that craft beer was so much more than just IPAs.  This is how I found Soft Parade and it’s subtle sweetness, depth of flavor and smooth finish made me realize there was something completely wonderful to these craft brews.

At this last visit my husband and I split a flight, which was such a great idea.  What I found most interesting was that as the beer lost some of it’s chill from the tap, the flavor profiles intensified.  I enjoyed all of the beers we tried (well, except the IPA) but at the end I was still sold on the Soft Parade.  Luckily it’s readily available in many restaurants and stores throughout the state.

And can I just tell you about the food for a minute?  Everyone says to try their pizza and the mac & cheese.  I didn’t feel like either that day, so I have three words for you, Pulled Pork Nachos.  These were probably the BEST nachos I’ve ever had – in fact I’m getting hungry just thinking about them.  One order, that they were kind enough to split and bring out on two plates, was the perfect lunch amount for my husband and I.  It’s worth it to go visit Short’s for the food even if you aren’t a beer drinker, you will still be throughly satisified.

Oh, just be warned, they are BUSY.  If you sit at a table by the main bar, pay it forward when you get your bill and give someone standing by your table a heads up that you’re about to leave.  Your kindness will be appreciated.
