Lake Life Recipes

Higgins Lake Salad

Once voted the “6th Most Beautiful Lake in the World,” Higgins Lake is still holding her own.  The backdrop for the summers of my youth will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Two years ago when my whole family was together again at the lake, I went out for a swim with my cousins same as we did 30 years ago.  This place of long summer days and once yearly family reunions hasn’t changed.  And even though life has taken many of us far away from Higgins Lake, it was still the same as our parents watched us swim in the invigorating (“It’s never cold at Higgins Lake!”) water from the warmth of the dock.

While the old house has seen many renovations since it’s birth in the 1920s, the lake and the birch trees out front remain a constant.  Those crystal clear waters have preserved every moment.  I know I can always look at those waves, whether in person or in a picture, and the memories I have are grand.

Higgins Lake Salad
serves 5 to 15

  • 1 to 2 heads of lettuce
  • Any vegetables available – chopped if not already
  • Leftover meat from last night’s dinner
  • Diced lunchmeat
  • Shredded Cheese
Combine in large bowl and toss throughly.  Set out with various dressing options.
**This salad is best served for lunch on the day everyone is heading home from a large family reunion.  Created by my Grandma, the purpose of this salad is to use up all the leftovers so nothing went to waste.

Use any leftovers on top of lettuce to create your own version of Higgins Lake Salad.
