tasting Michigan – 2 Lads Winery

Summer has started and so has my tour of Michigan’s wineries.  And I kicked it off in the grandest style possible – on Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City.

It began at 2 Lads.  Here you find this great contemporary tasting room in the middle of nature’s beauty.  Upon entering, it felt like I stepped out of Michigan and into a trendy new restaurant in Chicago but then you look to your right and there is the tasting bar overlooking the East Bay, and – wow!  So began my first sips of Northern Michigan’s wine.

View aside, what struck me right away was the flavor in the wine.  Each one I tried was different and thoroughly enjoyable, even if it wasn’t a variety I would necessarily buy a bottle of.  Like a drier Riesling.  I don’t like sweet wines so it was recommended that I try one of these Rieslings – indeed it wasn’t overly sweet, while it wasn’t my favorite, I would still enjoy a glass of this every now and then.

I bought a bottle and the last thing I noticed but really caught my eye was the label.  Now I know everyone says you aren’t supposed to pick a wine by the name or label but 2 Lads has a very pleasing, contemporary, design that (like their tasting room) sort of plays to the yin and yang of modern design complementing the nature around us.

2 Lads even has some enticing events throughout the summer.  You might just find me braving the Traverse City Cherry Festival crowds and heading up there on July 5th for their Picnic Pairing Party – it’s BYOB (for bring your own blanket, of course)!

Until then, I’m looking forward to enjoying my bottle of 2 Lads wine on a nice warm lazy day this summer!
