Michigan

a warming trend

There are days of unforgiving cold forever etched in my brain.  Days where a knee length down coat, uggs, a hat, three scarves, two pairs of gloves, huge sunglasses and a hood did nothing to keep out the biting, absolutely horrid, wind that lashed misery on those waiting at bus stops or walking from the train heading to work.

During this current series of temperatures in the single digits I’m realizing that perhaps one of my favorite things about Michigan is how -3 degrees here seems much warmer than -3 degrees in the city.  While that may not technically be true (and I’m sure there are thousands of students over at Michigan State University who would beg to differ with me right now) I don’t need quite as many scarves to keep in the warmth – in fact one seems to quite suffice.  It’s a grand thing when heading out of the house on a below zero day consists of no more than an invigorating 30 yard dash from car to building – and not a severe case of frostbite.

While I’ll never be a fan of these horrible temperatures that come around once a year no matter where I seem to live – I will happily hold onto my silver lining.  And a hot cup of tea.  Curled up under a blanket.
